March for an Ominous Occasion

March for an Ominous Occasion (originally March for a Precipitous Occasion) was commissioned by the Lumen Christi High School Band, Jackson, Michigan, Karl Baschal, director. It received it's world premier at Lumen Christi High School on May 3, 1977.

The march makes use of constantly shifting time signatures from two-four to eleven-four. The melodic content is based on a twelve-tone row and the harmonic content is based on the famous "Rite of Spring" chord (Igor Stravinsky) which consists of an E major triad and a super-imposed Eb major seventh chord in first inversion.
