Phantasm was commissioned by the St. Clair Shores High School Band, St. Clair Shores, Michigan, Thomas Course, director, and received it's world premier at the Annual Wind and Percussion Clinic at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, in April, 1976
Phantasm was Michael Pratt's bi-centennital piece. At one point the original National Anthem of The United States of America (a tune called Chester) is played in all twelve keys simultaneously. Later in the work the band splits into two opposing forces and actually requires two different conductors at the same time.
